Celebrations abundant in Falcons’ victory over UNC Pembroke

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo volleyball team had plenty of reasons to celebrate a 3-0 victory over Peach Belt Conference foe UNC Pembroke on the final day of the regular season Nov. 10, most notably because it marked the final home conference match for seniors Betsy Stevenson and Jordan Spinks.

In addition to celebrating the careers of its seniors, Montevallo also celebrated a career milestone for junior Manyi Ati, who pounded home the match-clinching kill in a 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 victory for her 1,000th career kill.

The Falcons had several additional reasons to celebrate after the victory, which allowed Montevallo to clinch the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament Nov. 16-18 in St. Augustine, Fla.

Spinks led the Falcons with a career-high 16 kills in her final home conference match. Spinks also recorded six digs in the win.

Ati added 10 kills in the victory, while freshman Rebekah Phelps posted seven kills.

Junior Kaleigh Harvey led Montevallo with 15 digs in the win, while freshman Jessica Falletta contributed nine digs. Stevenson also finished with nine digs to go along with a team-high 35 assists in the match.

The Falcons dropped a non-conference match against the University of West Florida 3-1 in its second match of the day Nov. 10.

Montevallo took the opening set 25-23 before dropping the next three sets 25-15, 25-20 and 25-14.

Ati led the Falcons with 12 kills in the match.

Sophomore Michelle Walker contributed nine kills, while Spinks and junior Michelle Carle finished with eight kills each.

Harvey posted a team-high 23 digs, while sophomore Brianna Guzinski contributed 15 digs. Freshman Briana Marquez led the Falcons with 23 assists in the match.

The Falcons will host No. 5 seed Augusta State University in their opening match of the Peach Belt Conference tournament, which will be held on the Flagler College campus. Montevallo will face off against the Jaguars in the second quarterfinal match of the day Nov. 16 at 11 a.m.
