Montevallo women’s basketball falls to Newberry College, 62-46

WINGATE, N.C. – The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team fell to Newberry College 62-46 in a non-conference game to close out its season-opening road trip Nov. 11 in the OrthoCarolina Classic on the Wingate University campus.

Senior Zena Nasiloski and junior Alexsis Brown led the Falcons (0-2) with nine points each. Nasiloski, who also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, finished 4-of-9 from the floor.

Sophomore Taylor Beverly finished with eight points, while junior Shay Bonner contributed seven points.

Brown and senior Alex Strickland led the Falcons with two assists each.

The Falcons opened the game with a 7-0 run, capped with a jumper by Brown, in the first two minutes. Montevallo led by as many as nine points twice in the first half, the last time at 18-9, following a pair of free throws by Beverly with 12:53 remaining in the half.

However, Newberry slowly chipped away at the Falcons’ lead and took its first lead of the game, 31-29, on a 3-pointer by Zara Pearson with 1:46 left in the opening half. Newberry carried a 34-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Newberry opened the second half with a 6-0 run in the first four minutes of the half to push its lead to 40-31. The Wolves took their first double-digit lead in the game, 45-35, following a 3-pointer by Pearson with 12:59 left in the game.

The Falcons cut the deficit to 47-39 with just under 10 minutes left in the second half following a jumper byJasmine Thomas before Newberry stretched its lead to as many as 19 points in the final minute of the game.

Montevallo returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 14 when it hosts UAH in the Falcons’ home opener at BankTrust Arena. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
