MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s golf team added newcomer Elaine Wood during the NCAA early signing period.

Wood, a Spanish Fort, Ala. native, will join the Falcons in the fall of 2013 as a freshman after graduating from Spanish Fort High School in the spring.

“Elaine is a tremendous signing for us,” said Montevallo women’s golf coach Justin Pratt. “She will make us better immediately and has all of the tools to be a great player. She has a great work ethic, attitude, discipline and love for golf that will help her take her golf game to another level and I can’t wait to have her play for us at Montevallo. She is already shooting really good scores, and with a little more refinement to her game I can’t wait to see what she can do.”

Wood is a two-sport standout at Spanish Fort High School in girls’ golf and girls’ basketball.

Wood finished eighth in individual standings at the 2012 Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A-1A state golf tournament. Wood shot an 8-over par 80 in the second round of the state tournament, which tied for the second lowest score in the final round, at the Robert Trent Jones Grand National course in Auburn, Ala. last May.

Wood also captured the individual title at the Baldwin County tournament last April by three strokes with a tournament best 7-over par 79 at the Quail Creek Golf Course in Fairhope, Ala. while helping Spanish Fort finish second in team standings.

Wood also finished with the best score in her age division in two separate PGA Dixie events this past summer. Wood carded a 5-over par 77 in a tournament at Timber Creek Golf Club in Daphne, Ala. and an 8-over par 80 in a tournament at Herron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala., with both scores leading the 16-18 age division.

Wood is also a standout on the Spanish Fort High School girls’ basketball team. Wood led Spanish Fort to a win over Saraland in the championship game of her team’s season-opening tournament, scoring 34 points and knocking down five 3- pointers. Wood also finished with seven steals, five rebounds, four assists and a block in the championship game.
