Stillman edges Montevallo on last-second shot

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College guard Frankie Peoples scored a basket with 2.6 seconds remaining to lift the Tigers to a 61-59 win over Montevallo in men’s basketball action Dec. 1 in a non-conference game on the Shelton State Community College campus.

Sophomore Ryan May fired a 3-pointer from near midcourt after the go-ahead basket by Stillman­­­­, but the last-second attempt bounced off the front rim at the buzzer.

May led the Falcons (3-2) with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-8 performance from beyond the arc. May, who scored 13 points in the opening half, knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:40 left in the game for his first field goal in the second half.

Senior Drico Hightower contributed 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Hightower also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Troran Brown finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-3 performance from 3-point range.

Senior Marvin Fitzgerald chipped in 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Junior Silas Mills added three points and three boards, while senior Jeff Hefner and finished with two points and six rebounds.

May scored the first 11 points of the game to give the Falcons a 11-4 advantage in the opening minutes. Stillman capped the opening half with a 6-0 run to carry a 31-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hightower knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with 1:01 remaining in the game to give the Falcons their first lead in second half, 58-57. Following a Stillman basket, the Falcons tied the game with 14 seconds left following a free throw by Fitzgerald before Peoples scored the game-winner on the other end of the floor.

Montevallo returns to action Dec. 6 with a trip to Tuskegee University in non-conference action.
