Barking up the right tree

It all began with a hunch — and a golden retriever named Andy.
Several years ago, Crossroads School principal Anna Whitney was sitting at her desk talking to former principal Brian Cain about innovative ideas she could bring to Hoover’s only alternative school for students in grades 6-12. She began discussing research she had read about the calming effect that dogs can have on people when an idea suddenly came to her.
“I said, ‘Can I bring my golden retriever to the school and just see what happens?’” Whitney said.
