COLUMBIANA – Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley will emcee the Celebration of the Arts luncheon benefiting the Shelby County Arts Council on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Chairwoman Peggy Wood said the luncheon’s sponsors – Columbiana Culture Club, Novella Club of Columbiana and the Vignette Club – are thrilled Bentley will participate.

The annual luncheon was revamped this year, including a title change from “Have a Heart for the Arts” luncheon.

“We were trying to put new life into it and make it a little bit different,” Wood said.

The luncheon will include a catered lunch by Fish Market and a fashion show featuring women’s and children’s fashions from Belk.

Wood, a Novella Club member, said they have raised more than $20,000 for the SCAC since the first joint luncheon six years ago.

Terri Sullivan, SCAC director of development, said the organization appreciates the club members’ efforts.

“It’s very humbling and flattering they would continue to do this,” she said.

Wood, who has taken SCAC classes for the last four years, said the organization offers an important artistic outlet in south Shelby County.

“We’re just thrilled that we have it in the community,” she said.

Sullivan said funds raised from the luncheon are used to offset costs that aren’t covered by grants for arts programs, as well as promotional materials.

“There are quite a few costs involved with offering arts programs,” she said. “The money gives us non-designated funds that we can use.”

Sullivan said members of the SCAC are excited about the luncheon, especially Bentley’s participation.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase who we are and what we do,” she said.

Local artists associated with the SCAC have donated artwork that will be for sale at the luncheon. Proceeds will also benefit the SCAC.

The luncheon will be held from 10 a.m.- 1p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 208 Main Street, Columbiana. Tickets cost $25 each or $250 for a table of eight and can be bought at the SCAC or Busy Hands Framing and Gifts in Columbiana. Tickets can also be bought from any club member or Peggy Wood at 669-9073.
