Alabaster

Nina Louise Winslett Kent, age 92, born May 11, 1920, passed away at her Alabaster home on Jan. 2, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Douglas M. Kent, and her parents, Clarence M. and Sally Green Winslett, all of Alabaster; and her sister, Elna Borella, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.

She is survived by her daughter, Joy Stanford (Melvin) of Pine Apple; son, Mike Kent (Rebecca) of Montevallo; grandchildren, Kent Stanford (Amy) of Ashville, Brian Stanford (Karrie) of Wetumpka, Amy Burkett (Eric) of Pine Apple, Michelle Brakefield (Scott) and Marsha Roach (Joey) of Alabaster.

She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren, Ross and Callie Stanford of Ashville, Emily Stanford of Wetumpka, Riley and Landon Burkett of Pine Apple, Noah, Winslett and Shepherd Brakefield of Alabaster and Tyler and Marlee Grace Roach of Alabaster; two nieces, Cindy Barker (Wayne) of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Dian McCray of Calera; six nephews, Warren Kent (Lynn) of Clarksville, Ga., Jim Kent of Birmingham, Tony Kent (Sandi) of Bend, Ore., Eric Nix (Farrell) of Columbus, Ga., Don Borella (Cherrie) of Davis, Ark., and Larry Borella (Lucille) of Dripping Springs, Texas; and a host of cousins and friends.

“Miss” Nina, also known as Nana, was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alabaster. She served as Sunday school director/teacher, choir member, vacation bible school director/teacher and was one of the first two women elected to serve as an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She was a dedicated volunteer for many programs in Shelby County. She was the first woman to receive the Alabama 4-H Alumni Award for Leadership and in December of 2012 was presented the Shelby County Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) Spirit Award. She recently retired her seat on the Shelby County Alfa Board of Directors where she served for many years. She was also an officer/member of the Siluria Friendship Club, the Siluria and Shelby County Homemakers Club, Alfa, Thompson PTA, Alabaster Library Board, the Alabaster City Council and the Shelby County Cattlewomen’s Association.

Pallbearers will be Kent Stanford, Brian Stanford, Eric Burkett, Scott Brakefield, Joey Roach and Eric Nix.

Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church of Alabaster, 8828 Hwy 119, Alabaster, on Friday, Jan. 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Alabaster, with Rev. Mark Davenport officiating her service. Burial will follow in the Elliottsville Cemetery.
