Warriors win Hoover Invitational

The Thompson Warriors picked up four individual championships on their way to the team title at the Scott Rohrer Hoover Invitational Jan. 5 at Hoover High School.
Riley Pike, Jaden Hunter, Brewer Gilliland and Nick Hall each won their respective weight classes to lead Thompson to 320.5 points. The Warriors were followed by Scottsboro (259) and Catholic (234.5).
Pike won the 108-pound classification with a decision win over Scottsboro’s Arick Shankles. Pike finished the tournament with a team-high 40 points for Thompson.
Jaden Hunter defeated Jackson Hall of Hoover in the 128-pound championship match.
Brewer Gilliland also finished with 40 points for the Warriors after winning the 140-pound final match. Gilliland defeated Caden McWhirter of Prattville with a pin in 1:35.
Nick Hall won the 172-pound finals with a decision win over Southside’s Kade Kitchens. Hall finished the tournament with 36 points.
A total of 11 Thompson wrestlers placed in the tournament. Reed Jacks and DeMario Haynes took second in their weight classes while Austin Gould and Conner Gilson each took third. TJ Rayam finished fourth in the 285 weight class while Jacobi Dial was eighth in the 197-pound classification.
Oak Mountain finished 11th place in the team standings with 132 points. The Eagles were led by fourth place finishes by Jared Godfrey and Lloyd Time. Billy Dasher took fifth with Hall Morton and Christopher Richmond each winning seventh place matches.
Spain Park took 14th in the tournament with 97.5 team points. Kevin McClure led the Jaguars with a third place finish. He defeated James Thomas of Huntsville by decision in the 184-pound third place match. Marcus Jackson took fifth in the 162 class with a pin over Joe Timberlake of Vestavia Hills. Blake Daniel finished sixth and Leon Strong took eighth in their respective classifications.
