The Pelham City Council voted unanimously during its Jan. 8 meeting to add a few words to the Pelham Civic Complex’s name in hopes of marketing the facility to a wider audience.

The building will now be known as the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena “in order to better reflect the scope and mission” of the facility, read the resolution passed by the council.

The Civic Complex, which contains two Olympic-sized ice rinks, is the only indoor ice venue in central Alabama. City officials previously said the name “Pelham Civic Complex” did not adequately advertise the facility’s offerings.

City Council President Rick Hayes previously said the city-owned complex has an “extreme amount of potential,” and said adding “ice” to the name will help publicize one of the facility’s strengths.

The resolution calls for all Civic Complex-related advertising, promotional literature and marketing materials to bear the new name “as soon as practical.”
