Four county teams ranked in top-10

Four Shelby County boys’ basketball teams continued to receive state recognition in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball polls released Jan. 10. Vincent, Shelby County, Thompson and Kingwood Christian were all ranked in the top-10 in their respective classifications.

The Vincent Yellow Jackets (14-4) moved up from No. 10 in the Dec. 20 poll to No. 6 in Class 2A this week. Vincent has recorded three straight wins including a 72-45 victory over B.B. Comer Jan. 8.

The Shelby County Wildcats (17-4) moved up to No. 5 in Class 5A. The Wildcats were ranked No. 6 in the last poll. The Wildcats are 5-1 in their last six games and are undefeated in area play.

The Thompson Warriors (20-2) moved from No. 10 to No. 5 in this week’s 6A poll. The Warriors are 6-1 since the last poll while winning their third straight Shelby County tournament.

The Kingwood Christian Lions (13-1) maintained their No. 4 ranking in the Alabama Independent School Association poll. The Lions are 5-0 since Dec. 20 while scoring an average of 72 points per game.

The Calera Lady Eagles and the Coosa Valley Lady Rebels were the only Shelby County girls’ basketball teams to be mentioned by the ASWA. The Lady Eagles received nominations in Class 4A with a 10-5 record. Coosa Valley received nominations in the AISA poll with an 11-2 record.
