Alabaster’s Albert L. Scott Public library will look to pack its new program room on Jan. 29 as Birmingham’s Vulcan Park and Museum mascot will help teach kids about the history of the city.

The “V” mascot, which is designed to replicate the cast iron statue overlooking downtown Birmingham, will visit the Alabaster Library at 6:15 p.m. as part of the library’s Big Event series.

During the visit, V and representatives from the Vulcan Park and Museum will explain the large statue, and will present a history of the Birmingham area – particularly its mining heritage.

Alabaster Youth Services Librarian Frances Smith said the event is tailored primarily toward elementary-aged children.

“We hope a lot of folks show up, because we have room to fit them now,” Smith said, referencing the library’s new 1,517-square-foot wing, which opened in July 2012.

The library will continue its Big Program series in February when the Good-Times Traveling Theater presents a Brer Rabbit-themed show in observance of Black History Month, Smith said.
