County teams move up in ASWA rankings

Three Shelby County high school boys’ basketball teams moved up in the rankings of the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball polls released Jan. 31.

The Thompson Warriors (24-3) made the largest leap of any Shelby County team in the rankings. The Warriors moved up to No. 4 in Class 6A from No. 8 last week. Thompson has won six of its last seven games and will host their area tournament starting Feb. 7.

The Vincent Yellow Jackets moved up two sports to No. 3 in Class 2A. The Yellow Jackets (20-5) finished with an 8-0 record in Area 13 play. This season marks the second consecutive year that Vincent has finished undefeated in area play and will host the area tournament beginning Feb. 5.

The Shelby County Wildcats (22-5) moved up to No. 5 in Class 5A. The Wildcats have won six straight games and finished 6-0 in Area 8 play.

The Kingwood Christian Lions (20-1) ended the regular season ranked No. 3 in the Alabama Independent School Association. The Lions have held steady at No. 3 in the division for the past three weeks. Kingwood opens play at the AISA Class 3A, Region 2 tournament Jan. 31 against Monroe Academy.

The Coosa Valley Academy Lady Rebels (16-4) finished the regular season No. 9 in the girls’ AISA poll. Coosa Valley dropped two games to No. 2 Glenwood and No. 10 Autauga Academy in the past week to drop two spots from last week.

The Calera Lady Eagles (15-7) have continued to pick up votes in Class 4A, but have not cracked into the top-10.
