Dozens of parents and students packed Meadow View Elementary School on Jan. 31 to have fun while learning during the school’s Family Math and Reading Night.

The night is an annual event filled with grade-appropriate activities and games designed to strengthen students’ math and reading skills while giving parents a glimpse into their child’s school day.

“The kids love showing their parents some of the things they do in school during the day,” said MVES reading specialist Heather Reeves. “Each grade does something different. The activities are tailored to that grade level.”

Throughout the night, the kids and parents completed activities such as passing notes back and forth to each other, using the Fast Math program in the computer lab and creating words out of letter tiles.

Reeves said members of the Thompson High School boys’ basketball team visited the school and made announcements about the event on the MVES morning news in the das leading up to the Math and Reading night.

During the event, several THS basketball players greeted the kids and parents at the door, and helped to keep the night running smoothly. MVES students who attended received a free ticket to the THS-Calera High School basketball game, which will be at THS on Feb. 1.
