AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of Montevallo freshman Cody Hughes was named the Peach Belt Conference baseball Freshman of the Week following the first week of his collegiate career Feb. 5.

Hughes earned the honor after recording a pair of saves in the Falcons’ series win on the road at Saint Leo University on the opening weekend of the season.

In his first career appearance, Hughes inherited two baserunners and recorded the final two outs while allowing just one walk while picking up his first save in the Falcons’ 7-2 win over Saint Leo in their season opener Feb. 1.

Hughes recorded a second save after helping the Falcons get out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning and retiring the side in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 6-4 win over the Lions on Feb. 3, which helped Montevallo clinch its opening series of the season.

Hughes is tied with Chase Butler of Armstrong at the top of the Peach Belt Conference leaderboard with two saves after the first three games of the season.

Hughes and his teammates return to action Wednesday, Feb. 6 with their home opener against Stillman College at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
