Pelham takes fourth at state meet

The Pelham High School girls’ indoor track and field team took fourth place in Class 6A at the AHSAA Indoor State Track Championships held at the Birmingham CrossPlex Feb. 2.

Caitland Smith led Pelham winning two races, including a record setting performance in the 60-meter dash. Smith set the state record with a time of 7.57 seconds previously held by Hoover’s Joy Maneice-Marbury set in 2012 (7.65). The Pelham junior also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.93 seconds – which was just three-quarters of a second off the record pace.

Mary Grace Strozier added a third place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:07.68 while taking fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:06.65.

Success on the track didn’t stop as the Pelham Lady Panthers took second in the 4×200, third in the 4×400 and fourth in the 4×800.

Erin Hines added a fifth place finish in the high jump.

Pelham finished with a total of 57 points. Mountain Brook High School won the Class 6A championship with 113.5 points
