Vincent leads county teams in final rankings

The Vincent Yellow Jackets finished the season as Shelby County’s highest ranked team in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball polls released Feb. 7.

The Yellow Jackets (20-6) finish the season ranked No. 4 in Class 2A. Vincent ranked as high as No. 3 in the 2A poll and finished area play undefeated for the second year in a row and will host the area tournament beginning Feb. 8 when they take on Holy Family at 7:30 p.m.

The Shelby County Wildcats (25-5) held steady at No. 5 in Class 5A. The Wildcats will also host their area tournament beginning Feb. 8 when they face Chilton County at 7:30 p.m.

The Thompson Warriors (25-4) dropped from No. 4 to No. 7 in the final Class 6A poll. The Warriors will host the Area 7 tournament on Feb. 8 when they face Stanhope Elmore at 7 p.m.

The Calera Lady Eagles (17-8) received votes in the girls’ Class 4A poll. The Lady Eagles are one of two Shelby County girls’ basketball teams to host an area tournament. Calera will take on West Blocton Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.

The teams in the Alabama Independent School Association were not ranked in the final ASWA poll released this week because their state playoffs have already begun.

The Coosa Valley Lady Rebels ended the season ranked No. 9 in the AISA in last week’s poll. The Lady Rebels will take on Wilcox Academy Feb. 7 in the AISA Class 2A Elite Eight.

The Kingwood Christian Lions ended their season ranked No. 3 in the AISA. The Lions will face Macon East Academy on Feb. 8 in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.
