Late 3-pointer lifts Clayton State over Montevallo in men’s basketball

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State University guard Charles Shedrick drained a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in the game to lift the Lakers to a 66-64 win over the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team in a Peach Belt Conference contest Feb. 9.

Sophomore Troran Brown led the Falcons (15-7 overall, 11-4 in Peach Belt Conference) with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc. Brown also dished out a team-high nine assists.

Sophomore Ryan May added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Senior Drico Hightower contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.

Senior Marvin Fitzgerald chipped in nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Jonas Brown finished with five points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Falcons continued their recent streak of getting off to a fast start, jumping out to a 11-0 lead following a layup by Hightower with 15:42 remaining in the opening half.

Clayton State stormed back with a 12-0 run of its own to take its first lead in the game following a jumper by Andrew Bachanov at the 11:55 mark in the first half.

The Lakers’ largest lead in the first half came with 10:15 left when Tony Dukes knocked down three free throws to give Clayton State a 17-14 advantage. Montevallo responded with a 5-0 run following a 3-pointer and a jumper by Troran Brown to take a 19-17 lead with just more than nine minutes remaining in the half.

The two teams continued to trade baskets down the stretch before the Lakers carried a 30-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Clayton State stretched its lead to 34-28 early in the second half following a layup by Dukes with 18:25 remaining. The Falcons used a 16-5 run, capped with a 3-pointer by May, midway through the second half to take a 46-41 lead with 10:56 left in the game.

The Lakers responded with an 8-0 run, capped with a free throw by Juron Dobbs, to take a 49-46 lead with 9:11 remaining. Troran Brown knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:23 left in the half to give the Falcons a 54-52 advantage before the Lakers rallied to take a 57-56 lead on a layup by Craig Wong.

The Lakers led by as many as three points in the final minutes following a free throw by Bachanov with 2:43 remaining in the game. Montevallo quickly took the lead back with a 5-0 run, capped with a pair of free throws by Troran Brown and a 3-pointer by May, to take a 61-59 lead.

May converted a three-point play with 1:01 remaining in the game to give the Falcons a 64-61 lead. However, the Lakers’ Omari Murray cut the deficit to one point on a layup with 36 seconds remaining before Shedrick’s 3-pointer with three seconds remaining lifted Clayton State to the 66-64 victory.

A 3-pointer by Troran Brown was off the mark at the buzzer.

Montevallo returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 13 with a home game against Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern State University at BankTrust Arena. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Falcons get a shot at revenge against Clayton State on Saturday, Feb. 16 when Montevallo hosts the Lakers in a nationally-televised game at BankTrust Arena. Tip off for the game televised by CBS Sports Network is set for 11 a.m.
