Pelham will look to make its residents more prepared for a tornado outbreak during a March 6 tornado awareness and preparedness event at the Pelham Civic Complex.

The event will be held from noon-6 p.m., and will feature members of the Fox 6 television station’s storm tracker team. During the event, the storm tracker team will provide tornado safety information and training, and will conduct a live broadcast from the event.

The seminar is open to all Pelham employees and citizens, and “will provide timely and important information regarding severe weather in our area,” read a city press release.

Pelham Mayor Gary Waters said Pelham has had tornado “near misses” in the past, and said witnessing the destruction caused in Tuscaloosa in 2011 was an eye-opening experience.

“We need to be as prepared as we can be,” Waters said.

The city is looking to hand out a limited number of weather radios to event attendees. Businesses interested in donating weather radios to be handed out at the event should call Chris DeShazo at 620-6456 or 288-1044.
