Falcons clinch sweep of Flagler College in conference series

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo baseball team clinched a sweep of visiting Flagler College following a 7-6 walk-off win in extra innings over the Saints in the final game of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series March 10.

Junior Jackson Slaid drove in junior Austin Dubberly with an RBI single to right-center field in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Falcons (17-7 overall, 9-3 in Peach Belt Conference) racked up 11 hits in the win, which marked the 10thconsecutive game Montevallo has finished with more than 10 hits.

“That was a great college baseball game,” said Montevallo baseball coach Chandler Rose. “Both teams played really hard and competed for 10 innings. Not only was it a great weekend but it was an outstanding week. I’m really proud of our team going 6-1 this week, having seven games in seven days. It really says a lot about our character and toughness. We have a lot of the season left and need to keep working to improve everyday.”

Junior Will Fulmer led the Falcons offensively as he finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Fulmer also scored two runs in the victory.

Freshman Thomas Bradey, who drove in two runs and scored one run, finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer. Sophomore Vinny Rodriguez, who drove in two runs and scored one run, went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

Senior Austin Dubberly finished 2-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs. Junior Jackson Slaid went 1-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs. Junior Todd Thompson went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Sophomore Pablo Martell also went 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Josh Floyd finished 1-for-1 at the plate.

Freshman Cody Hughes picked up the win after giving up just two hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings in relief.

Junior starter Edward Brandsema allowed four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. Senior Devon Davis finished with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Freshman Aron McRee gave up two hits and issued one walk in one inning in relief. Junior Alex Guilfordallowed two earned runs on one hit with one walk in 1/3 of an inning in relief.

The Falcons plated four runs in the bottom half of the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Fulmer, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a RBI double to left-center field by Rodriguez. Dubberly, who reached on an infield single, scored on a passed ball. Rodriguez came around to score on a two-run homer by Bradey later in the inning .

Flagler College cut the deficit to 4-1 with a solo homer by Chace Mitchell in the top of the fourth inning.

The Saints tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the fifth inning. Nick Kranick singled through the right side, which drove in Brett Morela, before scoring on a two-run blast by Jay Laurienz.

The Falcons went up 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Thompson, who reached on a single, scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Slaid.

Montevallo took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Fulmer singled and scored on a RBI double to right-center field by Rodriguez.

Flagler College tied the game at 6-6 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jake Hanson singled and scored on a RBI single by Morela before Andrew Brodbeck scored on a sacrifice fly by Kranick.

Slaid came through in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Falcons to the victory with his RBI single, which plated Dubberly, who reached on a walk.

The Falcons return to action Wednesday, March 13 with a non-conference game against UAH. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
