Montevallo tops Georgia Southwestern in women’s tennis

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team picked up its second Peach Belt Conference victory of the season March 9 following a 5-4 win over visiting Georgia Southwestern.

The Falcons (6-4 overall, 2-3 in Peach Belt Conference) won three singles’ matches and two doubles’ matches against the Hurricanes.

Sophomore Niki Polcerova defeated Kalie Douberly of Georgia Southwestern 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles’ match, improving her record to 10-0 in singles’ matches this season. Sophomore Anais Robert defeated Taylor Jones of Georgia Southwestern 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles’ match.

Senior Lauren Blair defeated Kathryn Bradshaw of Georgia Southwestern 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles’ match.

Polcerova and Robert defeated Carly Cangelosi and Victoria Ondo of Georgia Southwestern 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles’ match. Junior Haley Highfield and freshman Allison Howell defeated Douberly and Jones 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles’ match.

Highfield fell to Cangelosi 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles’ match. Howell fell to Ondo 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 in the No. 3 singles’ match.

Freshman Juanita Ossa fell to Mollie McGowan of Georgia Southwestern 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 in the No. 5 singles’ match. Blair and Ossa fell to Ginny Jones and McGowan 9-8 in the No. 3 doubles’ match.

The Falcons return to action Tuesday, March 12 with a road trip to Tuskegee University for a 1 p.m. match.
