Falcons headed back to NCAA tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team earned its eighth NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament bid in the past 10 years March 10 after earning an at-large bid as the No. 6 seed in the Southeast Region.

Montevallo (20-9) will face Conference Carolinas regular-season co-champion Barton College, the No. 3 seed, in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament quarterfinals Saturday, March 16 on the USC Aiken campus in Aiken, S.C. USC Aiken defeated Montevallo, the Peach Belt Conference West Division regular-season champion, 65-60 in the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship game March 10.

The NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament semifinals will be held Sunday, March 17, followed by the region tournament championship game Tuesday, March 19.

USC Aiken, the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region, will host the tournament after capturing the Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championship. The Pacers will face No. 8 seed Belmont Abbey College, the Conference Carolinas tournament champion, in the quarterfinals.

Lincoln Memorial University, the South Atlantic Conference regular season champion, earned the No. 2 seed and will face Peach Belt Conference opponent UNC Pembroke, which enters the tournament as the No. 7 seed after earning an at-large bid, in the quarterfinals. Wingate University, the South Atlantic Conference tournament champion, will face Limestone College, the Conference Carolinas regular-season co-champion, in the quarterfinals.

The bid marks the Falcons’ fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament. Montevallo captured the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament championship last season on its way to its first ever appearance in the national championship game.

The Falcons own a 18-7 all-time record in the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament.

Montevallo owns three region tournament championships in the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament. The Falcons captured back-to-back South Region championships during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons and took home the Southeast Region title last season.

All eight of the Falcons’ appearances in the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament have come in the past decade under head coach Danny Young.

The Southeast Region tournament champion will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The first two rounds of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight are set for Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky., on March 28-30.

The NCAA Division II championship game will be held on Sunday, April 7 at Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Ga. on the day between the NCAA Division I semifinals and finals as part of the NCAA’s 75th Anniversary celebration.
