Falcons open NCAA tournament against Barton College

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team, the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament, will face No. 3 seed Barton College in the region tournament quarterfinals Saturday, March 16.

Tip off is set for 11 a.m. CST at the USC Aiken Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C.

Tickets will be available at the door during the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds. General admission for the quarterfinal and semifinal round is $8 for adults and $5 for students. General admission for the championship game is $10 for adults and $5 for students. All children 2-and-under are admitted free to all games.

Montevallo, which earned an at-large bid in the Southeast Region, is making its eighth NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament appearance in the past 10 years, including its fourth-consecutive appearance in the national tournament. The Falcons are the defending NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament champions.

Montevallo, in its fourth season as a member of the Peach Belt Conference and the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, captured its third region tournament title in school history last season on its way to the school’s first ever appearance in the national championship game. The Falcons also captured NCAA Division II South Region tournament championships during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

The Falcons (20-9) won the Peach Belt Conference West Division championship for the second-consecutive season. Montevallo advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship game before falling to East Division champion USC Aiken 65-60.

The Falcons lead the Peach Belt Conference following the regular season and conference tournament with their 48.9 percent shooting from the floor, as well as 41.9 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Montevallo enters the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament with four players averaging double figures in scoring.

Sophomore Troran Brown, a 6-foot-2 guard from Phoenix, Ariz., leads the Falcons in scoring with an average of 18.4 points per game. Brown, who was named first team All-Peach Belt Conference, also leads the team with an average of 5.9 assists per game.

Senior Drico Hightower, a 6-foot-7 forward from Augusta, Ga., is averaging 16.6 points per game. Hightower, who is shooting 61.6 percent from the floor this season, is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. Hightower was named first team All-Peach Belt Conference.

Senior Marvin Fitzgerald, a 6-foot-5 forward from Milwaukee, Wisc., is putting up 11.7 points per game. Fitzgerald is also averaging a team-high nine rebounds per game.

Sophomore Ryan May, a 6-foot guard from Fayetteville, N.C., is averaging 10.4 points per game. May leads the team with his 48.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc this year.

Barton College (21-7) earned an at-large bid in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament as the Conference Carolinas regular-season co-champion. The Bulldogs, who won the NCAA Division II national championship during the 2006-2007 season, fell to Belmont Abbey College 105-87 in the Conference Carolinas tournament semifinals.

The Bulldogs are led by senior Gerald Boston, a 5-foot-10 guard from Burlington, N.C., who is averaging a team-best 21.3 points and 4.9 assists per game. Boston was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and first team All-Conference Carolinas following his senior season.

Senior Jon Hart, a 6-foot-4 forward from Mount Olive, N.C., is averaging 12.1 points per game. Hart, who was named second team All-Conference Carolinas, leads Barton College in rebounding with an average of 8.4 boards per game.

Freshman Chris Flemmings, a 6-foot-5 guard from Cary, N.C., is averaging 10.7 points per game. Flemmings enters the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament shooting 43.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The winner in the quarterfinal matchup will advance to face the winner between No. 2 seed Lincoln Memorial University and No. 7 seed UNC Pembroke in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament semifinals Sunday, March 17 at 4 p.m. CST.
