MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo baseball team defeated visiting Columbus State University 5-4 in the opening game of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series March 15 at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

“It’s always great to win game one of the series,” said Montevallo baseball coach Chandler Rose. We have two important and tough games tomorrow. Columbus State has a very good team and Michael Shreves was phenomenal tonight against a tough lineup. Our situational hitting helped us scratch some runs and our guys competed well at the plate all night.”

Shreves, the Falcons’ senior starter, improved to 5-2 on the mound after giving up four earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts without allowing a walk in 8 1/3 innings of action.
