Montevallo sophomore named conference women’s tennis Player of the Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of Montevallo sophomore Niki Polcerova became the first women’s tennis player in school history to be named a Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week with her selection for the award March 25.

Polcerova, who is ranked No. 11 among singles’ players in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings, went 2-0 in both No. 1 singles’ matches and No. 1 doubles’ matches last week to improve to 12-2 overall in singles’ play and 9-5 overall in doubles’ action.

The sophomore from Bratislava, Slovakia downed UNC Pembroke’s Mia Winterbottom 6-0, 6-3 in singles’ action March 18 and partnered with fellow sophomore Anais Robert to beat the Braves’ Winterbottom and Hannah Herlocker 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles’ match.

Polcerova was then responsible for two of the Falcons’ three points in a 6-3 loss to Flagler.

Polcerova beat Barbora Sebkova 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles’ match March 22 against the Saints before teaming with Robert to defeat Flagler College’s No. 1 doubles’ team of Hannah Goettsching and Thaisa Pereira 8-5.

Polcerova has the second-highest winning percentage (.846) among No. 1 singles’ players in the Peach Belt Conference.

Polcerova and her teammates return to action Tuesday, March 26 with a non-conference match against BYU-Hawaii at 10 a.m.
