Briarwood dominates county tennis tournament

PELHAM – The Briarwood Christian School girls’ tennis team won all but one match to take the 2013 Shelby County girls tennis tournament title April 1 at the Pelham Tennis Center.

Briarwood won every final match of the tournament led by Ashley Ochsenhirt. Ochsenhirt defeated Thompson’s Laura Harwell in the No. 1 single championship match.

Jud Tarence, Ashton Henderson, Ellie Tarence, Kateleigh Calloway, Olivia Odom, Frannie Ware and Katherine Collier each won their respective final matches. Ochsenhirt and Jud Tarence led Briarwood pairings with a victory in the No. 1 doubles championship match.

Thompson took second in the tournament with 37 points behind Briarwood’s 57 points for the team title. Oak Mountain (19), Chelsea (15) and Pelham (10) rounded out the top-5 in the team standings. Indian Springs finished with seven points, Westminster School of Oak Mountain had two points and Shelby County finished scoreless.
