MONTEVALLO – University of Montevallo Athletic Director Jim Herlihy announced the promotion of women’s soccer coach Jeremy Hampton from an interim basis to the program’s third head coach in its 17-year history Friday, April 12.

“We are pleased to continue working with Jeremy and look forward to watching his team play this fall,” Herlihy said.

Hampton takes over the program on a full-time basis after serving as the Falcons’ interim head coach for the past five months. Hampton follows longtime Montevallo women’s soccer coach Patricia Hughes, who was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations after leading the women’s soccer program the past 12 seasons.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be joining such a prestigious academic institution and an athletic department with a rich tradition of success,” Hampton said.

“Montevallo made such a strong impression on me that the opportunity from a professional standpoint and being able to coach here was impossible to pass up. I want to thank Dr. Stewart, Mr. Herlihy, and all involved with the Montevallo family for the opportunity.”

Hampton helped guide the Falcons to a postseason appearance in his first season as an assistant coach. Montevallo advanced to the Peach Belt Conference for the third time in four years since joining the conference in 2009.

Hampton helped coach Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and All-Peach Belt Conference selectionJade Pennock during the 2012 season as an assistant coach at Montevallo. Hampton focused on defense as an assistant coach, helping guide the Falcons to three shutouts during the season.

Hampton also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at the University of Alabama from 2005-2008. While in Tuscaloosa, Hampton recruited players throughout North America, including Alabama, Canada, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Ohio and Texas. Hampton coached the 2007 SEC Freshman Goalkeeper of the Year and had his goalkeepers produce the fourth, fifth and 10th highest save percentages in program history. He helped reduce the goalkeepers’ goals against average from 2.65 in 2006 to 1.49 in 2007.

In 2011, Hampton served as the head coach at Pascagoula High School in Pascagoula, Miss. before joining the Montevallo program as an assistant coach. Hampton also coached two other high school teams in Mississippi and Alabama.

Hampton served as the head coach at Pascagoula High School for just one season, but improved the girls’ soccer team’s record from 4-10-2 in 2011 to 9-6-1 in 2011. Hampton served as the budget director of the team and implemented a study hall program to help improve the team’s academic success.

Prior to his stint at Pascagoula High School, Hampton served as the head women’s soccer coach at Marion Military Institute from 2008-2011. As the inaugural head coach of the program, Hampton was in charge of recruiting, budgeting and all team events.

Hampton is a 2002 graduate of the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science. He went on to earn his State of Alabama Teaching Education certification from the University of West Alabama in 2003.

Hampton earned his master’s degree in human performance with an emphasis in sports management from the University of Alabama in 2010.
