Ten Montevallo athletes qualify for conference championship meet

MONTEVALLO – Ten University of Montevallo student-athletes have earned a spot in the Peach Belt Conference women’s track and field championship meet April 19-20 in Rome, Ga.

The Falcons’ contingent at the conference championship meet, hosted by Shorter University, will be led by junior Shay Bonner, who qualified in four events, along with seniors Kaley Glover and Haley Evans and freshman Lauren Recchia, who each qualified to compete in three events.

Bonner qualified in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles events. Bonner posted a time of 12.88 seconds in the 100-meter dash in the Emory Classic, a time of 26.72 seconds in the 200-meter dash in the Samford Invitational, a time of 15.54 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles in the Mississippi College Open and a time of 1:08.76 in the 400-meter hurdles in the Mississippi College Open.

Glover qualified in the 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run events. Glover posted a time of 2:31.99 in the 800-meter run in the Birmingham-Southern Invitational, a time of 18:16.98 in the 5,000-meter run in the Samford Invitational and a time of 39:22.34 in the 10,000-meter run in the Emory Classic.

Recchia qualified in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run events. Recchia posted a time of 2:27.45 in the 800-meter run in the Samford Invitational, a time of 5:06.57 in the 1,500-meter run in the Birmingham-Southern Invitational and a time of 19:42.60 in the 5,000-meter run in the Birmingham-Southern Invitational.

Evans qualified in the 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase events. Evans posted a time of 19:50.20 in the 5,000-meter run in the Samford Invitational, a time of 41:47.63 in the 10,000-meter run in the Emory Classic and a time of 12:23.39 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mississippi College Open.

Junior In-Mi Matsunaga qualified for the conference championship meet in two events.

Matsunaga qualified in the 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run events. Matsunaga posted a time of 5:05.96 in the 1,500-meter run in the Mississippi College Open and a time of 19:11.38 in the 5,000-meter run in the 5,000-meter run in the Emory Classic.

Freshman Connor Dixon qualified for the 400-meter hurdles event in the conference championship meet after posting a time of 1:10.32 in the event at the Emory Classic.

Sophomore Katie Vanover qualified for the 5,000-meter run event in the conference championship meet after posting a time of 20:29.86 in the event at the Mississippi College Open.

Sophomore Madison Brown, who leads the conference with the best mark in the javelin throw during the regular season, will compete in the conference championship meet in the event after her toss of 122 feet, 9 inches in the event at the Emory Classic.

Sophomore Brianna Guzinski will compete in the triple jump competition at the conference championship meet after her qualifying leap of 33 feet, 8.75 inches in the Mississippi College Open.

The Falcons’ 1,600-meter relay team, which includes Bonner, Brown, Dixon and freshman Brandi Hatter, will also compete in the conference championship meet after posting a qualifying time of 4:19.36 in the event in the Mississippi College Open.
