Brown claims individual title in inaugural conference championship meet

ROME, Ga. – University of Montevallo sophomore Madison Brown became the Falcons’ first ever individual title winner as she won the javelin throw competition in the inaugural Peach Belt Conference women’s track and field championship meet April 20.

The Falcons finished seventh overall in team standings with 36 total points in their first conference championship meet. Montevallo edged Augusta State in team standings.

“We are very proud of the way the team competed,” said Montevallo women’s track and field coach Tommy Barksdale. “The effort they showed is what we were looking for as the program continues to grow.”

UAH, an associate member of the Peach Belt Conference in women’s track and field, won the inaugural championship after racking up 171 total points in the meet. Nova Southeastern and Shorter University, also associate members in women’s track and field, finished second and third in team standings with 163 points and 145 points, respectively.

Brown, who posted the longest throw with a 122-foot, 9-inch toss during the regular season, claimed the javelin throw title after her toss of 116 feet, 10 inches in the championship meet, which edged second-place finisher Hanna Metzinger of UNC Pembroke by more than one feet and earned her All-Peach Belt Conference honors.

Other top finishers in the conference championship meet included Senior Kaley Glover, who earned All-Peach Belt Conference status after finishing second in individual standings in the 10,000-meter run.

Glover finished with a time of 39:46.91, which placed her just more than one minute behind event winner Michelle Kruse of UAH.

Glover also came in sixth in individual standings in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:48.88.

Senior Haley Evans finished fourth in individual standings in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Evans, who recorded a time of 12:11.24, finished less than one minute behind event winner Peri Bowman of Nova Southeastern.

Junior Shay Bonner finished sixth in individual standings in the 400-meter hurdles event with a time of 1:07.84. Bonner also came in seventh in individual standings in the 100-meter hurdles event with a time of 17.27 seconds.

Sophomore Brianna Guzinski came in ninth in individual standings in the triple jump competition with her jump of 33 feet, 9.5 inches. Guzinski also finished 10th in individual standings in the long jump competition with her leap of 15 feet, 4 inches.

Freshman Audrey House finished ninth overall in both the shot put and discus throw competitions. House finished with a distance of 28 feet, 8.5 inches in the shot put competition, while posting a throw of 86 feet, 2 inches in the discus throw.

Montevallo finished sixth in the 1,600-meter relay event after Bonner, Brown, Connor Dixon and Brandi Hattercombined to post a time of 4:19.49.

The Falcons’ 400-meter relay team, which included Guzinski, Bonner, Dixon and Courtney Boyd, finished eighth in the event’s standings after recording a time of 53.18 seconds.
