Falcons drop final game in series at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo baseball team fell to Georgia College 15-3 in the third and final game of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series on the road April 27.

The Bobcats scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a one-run deficit.

Junior Jackson Slaid and freshman Josh Floyd led the Falcons offensively after each finished 1-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run.

Junior Will Fulmer went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Sophomore Vinny Rodriguez, who had the Falcons’ lone extra-base hit with a double, and freshman Thomas Bradey each finished 1-for-4 at the plate. Senior Austin Dubberly went 1-for-3 at the plate, while freshmen Brandon Marshall and Michael Simmons scored one run each.

Junior starter Edward Brandsema took the loss after giving up five runs, including two earned runs, on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.

Senior Devon Davis and freshman Aron McRee each allowed an earned run without recording an out in relief. Freshman Jake Christensen surrendered five earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks in 2/3 of an inning, while sophomore Mason Morris gave up three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Marshall, who reached on a walk, stole second base and advanced to third base on an infield single by Bradey before scoring on an error by the Bobcats.

Georgia College plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Daniel Bick, who singled up the middle, came around to score on a RBI single by Cody Maas. Clay Ardeeser, who doubled to right field in the inning, scored on a ground out for a double play.

Montevallo tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Simmons, who reached on a walk, came around to score on a RBI single to left field by Floyd.

The Falcons took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Fulmer, who led off the inning with a single to right field, scored on a RBI single up the middle.

The Bobcats took a 8-3 lead with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. Bick and Ardeeser both produced a two-run double in the inning.

Georgia College extended its lead to 12 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which included a grand slam by Jeremy Donaldson.

The Falcons return to action in their final game of the regular season Saturday, May 4 at Shorter University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CST.

Montevallo has clinched a berth in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, which will be held May 8-12 in Greenwood, S.C.

The Falcons, the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament, will face top-seeded USC Aiken in its tournament opener May 8.
