FROM STAFF REPORTS

University of Montevallo has decided to move its spring commencement ceremony from Flowerhill to the McChesney Student Activity Center.

“We have been advised that Saturday’s forecast is highly unpredictable and carries with it a significant chance of rain,” according to a statement issued by Marion Brown, a member of UM’s commencement committee.

Brown said university officials worked with the National Weather Service before making the decision.

Graduation is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m. Rehearsal is schedule for Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. in the activity center.

Because we have moved to an indoor location, we must issue tickets for the ceremony,” Brown said. “As it stands, we will be able to issue seven tickets for each graduate. Students needing more tickets may be able to request extras at rehearsal based on availability.”

Handicapped parking for guests is available in the lot at the front of the activity center. Guests may also be dropped off at the front door to avoid the inclement weather or a longer walk. People who need wheelchair accommodations may access two different areas to view the ceremony.

There will be a wheelchair area on the walking track located on the second level as you exit the elevator. The elevator is located to the left of the hospitality desk near the activity center’s entrance. Wheelchairs may also utilize the area in front of first row of the end zone bleachers—the first row will be reserved for family members of those in wheelchairs so guests will be able to sit together.

The UM National Alumni Association reception that was scheduled on King Quad will be held in the concourse of the arena beginning at 8 a.m.

Additional questions will be addressed at the rehearsal. Contact Marion Brown at Brownm@montevallo.edu with specific concerns.
