Adam Moseley will serve as the president of the Alabaster Board of Education and board newcomer Derek Henderson will serve as the vice president over the next year after both were elected to their new seats during a May 13 meeting.

During the meeting, the board voted 3-2 in favor of Moseley as president. Moseley, Henderson and School Board member Linda Church voted in favor of Moseley and School Board members John Myrick and Ty Quarles voted against.

Before the vote for board president, Church nominated Moseley, a former Alabaster City Council member, for the seat and Myrick nominated Quarles.

Also during the meeting, the board voted unanimously to elect Henderson as the entity’s vice president. May 13 marked Henderson’s first meeting as a member of the School Board after he was appointed to the board by the City Council on May 6.

Henderson was sworn into his School Board seat about an hour before he was elected as vice president.

“I know he has a lot of experience serving in that capacity,” Church said as she nominated Henderson for the vice president position.

According to state law, the School Board must elect its president and vice president each year during its first meeting in May.

Moseley will replace former School Board president Melanie Shores, who stepped down from the board in March, citing health reasons. Henderson will replace Quarles as School Board vice president.

Quarles served as the School Board’s interim president after Shores resigned from the board.

“I publicly want to express my personal thanks,” Alabaster Interim Superintendent Dr. Phillip Hammonds told Quarles. “I am most grateful for all you’ve done.”
