The concession stands at Alabaster’s Buck Creek Park will serve as the base of operations for an organization aimed at making sure children don’t go hungry over the summer months.

During its May 20 meeting, the Alabaster City Council approved an agreement to allow the Sowers of Seed organization to use the concession stand throughout the summer to prepare meals for Alabaster children on the free and reduced lunch program.

Through the program, volunteers will prepare meals at the concession stand, and will serve children at the park, at the Alabaster YMCA or at Emmanuel Temple Holiness Church.

Project organizer Lynn Coleman said the program will help to ensure students in need do not go hungry when they are out of school for the summer.

“We work with the school counselors and Manna Charities to identify the kids in the greatest need,” Coleman said.

The program will cover the entire 12 weeks the students are out for summer, and will also give them a chance to participate in kid-friendly events.

“We have plenty of volunteers who help with this,” Coleman said. “We will have games and crafts, and we will offer a Bible club. We don’t want them to just come, eat and leave. We want to serve them.”

The program is funded through a grant from the TJ Maxx company, and is in the running for three more grants, Coleman said.
