Two local high schools among Newsweek’s best

Two high schools located in Shelby County made Newsweek and The Daily Beast’s list of America’s Best High Schools earlier in May.

Oak Mountain High School and Spain Park High School made the list at Nos. 578 and 613, respectively.

In the rankings, Newsweek cited Oak Mountain’s graduation rate of 97 percent and that 92 percent of its students attend college. Oak Mountain’s average SAT score was 1603 out of a possible 2400, and the average ACT score was 24.4 out of a possible 36.

For Spain Park, Newsweek cited its graduation rate of 95 percent, along with the 97 percent of Spain Park students who attend college. Spain Park’s average SAT score was 1719, while the average ACT score was 24.1.

Other Birmingham-area schools that made the list included the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School at No. 15, Mountain Brook High School at No. 152, Vestavia Hills High School at No. 429, Homewood High School at No. 1,049, Ramsay High School at No. 1,712 and Hewitt-Trussville High School at No. 1,910.
