COLUMBIANA— Operation: Military Kids is hosting a weeklong summer camp for kids in military families at Alabama’s 4-H center in Columbiana June 24-28.

OMK supports military families in all but seven states nationwide. The operation focuses on connecting military youth with local resources and other youth to enhance a strong sense of community, said Rachel Simpson, OMK coordinator.

Military youth from ages 8-18 are welcome to attend. The cost for the camp is $20. The camp is underwritten with a federal grant, allowing for the low cost, Simpson said.

“We have kids from all over the state of Alabama. We have a few that are out of state, from Florida, Georgia and Mississippi,” Simpson said.

The camp will be divided into three groups: Alpha, Bravo and Charlie, according to age.

The campers will have many activities throughout the week that focus on team dynamics, such as water team building and obstacle courses. There will also be canoeing, swimming, archery, and fishing, Simpson said.

There will be an art studio provided by Abrakadoodle on Tuesday that allows the kids to show their creative sides. The National Guard will visit the camp on Thursday and put on a vehicle display, Simpson said.

A highlight of the camp is the raptor bird program provided by the 4-H Center.

“It will show the kids different types of raptors, and is a good education opportunity,” Simpson said.

Thursday evening will end with a bonfire before the final lights out, Simpson said.
