INVERNESS — A 59-year-old man died in a structure fire at the Lakes at Inverness apartments July 7.

At approximately 8:50 p.m. July 7, Shelby County 911 was notified of a structure fire at the apartments. Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call, as well as the Cahaba Valley, Hoover and Birmingham fire departments, according to a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Mark Wayne Gambrell, of Birmingham, was pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation suggests a kitchen fire was the point of origin for the fire, but a final determination has not been reached, according to the press release.

An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
