A 39-year-old Maylene man attempted to pass in front of an oncoming train on July 12 when his truck was struck by the train’s locomotive in Alabaster, according to a police report on the accident.

Danny Michael Amos was transported to UAB Hospital after suffering serious injuries in the wreck, according to the Alabaster Police Department. Amos has since been released from the hospital.

The wreck happened at about 9:15 a.m. on July 12 at the railroad crossing behind Alabaster City Hall, and shut down portions of U.S. 31 and Second Place Northwest for about an hour.

According to the police report, witnesses said Amos was traveling toward U.S. 31 on Second Place Northwest when his pickup truck was struck by the train. Amos “tried to stop, but decided to pass the train,” according to a witness statement in the police report.

Witnesses said the railroad crossing signal was functioning at the time of the accident, according to the police report.

Amos was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident occurred, according to the police report. In addition to Amos’ vehicle, two other vehicles behind Alabaster City Hall were damaged by debris from the collision.
