Alabaster’s student-athletes and fans will be able to see the action a little better during the upcoming school year, as the district is replacing more than 20 stadium light bulbs this week.
During an Aug. 7 Alabaster Board of Education meeting, the School Board approved the replacement of 22 stadium light bulbs at several school sports fields. The district is replacing four bulbs at Larry Simmons Stadium, 12 bulbs at the THS baseball field and six bulbs at the softball field, said ACS Operations Coordinator Jeff Atkins.
“They are going to do that either today or tomorrow,” Atkins said on Aug. 14.
During the Aug. 7 School Board meeting, School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers called the bulb replacement a “good-faith gesture” to the school’s athletic programs.
“We need our coaches focusing on winning ball games and raising our young people into champions and not on raising money to replace light bulbs,” Vickers said.
The bulb replacement is part of a battery of school renovation and cleaning projects ACS officials are working to complete before school starts on Monday, Aug. 19.
“It’s been a busy week for us,” Atkins said. “But everything will be good to go by Monday.”
