CHELSEA – A Shelby County man accused of holding five Chelsea Middle School students hostage in February has been indicted on five counts of kidnapping and one count of making terrorist threats. He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail due to bond violations.

Ryan Matthew Sims was released on bonds totaling $515,000 June 6 and was indicted Aug. 16.

Two days prior to the indictment on Aug. 14, Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies found a “box containing 49 rounds of live 22 cal. cartridges” in his bedroom, according to court documents. The Shelby County District Attorney’s office filed a motion to revoke Sims’ bond the same day.

Sims was also arrested by sheriff’s deputies and taken to the Shelby County Jail Aug. 14, where he is currently being held. He is set to appear in court for a bond hearing Aug. 20 and an arraignment hearing Oct 2.

Sims was initially charged with five counts of kidnapping and one charge of terrorist threats after allegedly holding five girls at gunpoint at Chelsea Middle School. Sims’ attorneys, Wendall Sheffield and John Letine, said in a May 8 hearing that Sims had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Sims’ bond was originally set at $1 million per kidnapping charge, but was later reduced to $100,000 per charge. Bond for the terrorist threat charge was $15,000.

During the May 8 hearing to have his bond reduced, Sims’ attorneys said all firearms and weapons had already been removed from the family’s home. They also outlined the conditions that would be met for Sims to be released:

– Electronic monitoring,

– 24/7 house arrest with exceptions to visit his attorneys, attend court hearings and receive treatment for paranoid schizophrenia,

– Supervision by a third-party custodian, his grandfather.
