PLANTERSVILLE — The Dallas County Hornets upended Montevallo Friday, 15-7, in a preseason jamboree.

Dallas County’s opening drive looked promising, as quarterback Scott Cole found Justin Chandler down field for a 17-yard pass, setting up the Hornets at the Bulldog 24 yard line. Montevallo then recovered a fumble on the ensuing play.

Montevallo would go three and out on every possession during the first quarter, but the Hornets could only muster three additional first downs.

With less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Hornet’s junior varsity squad ran a half back pass for a 42-yard touchdown, making it 8-0 after the two point conversion.

Dallas County was able to put together another scoring drive late in the third quarter. After being flushed out of the pocket, Prince Tolbert, Jr. connected with Delando Atchison on a wheel route for a 26-yard gain. Scott Cole would later carry the ball down to the 2, giving the Hornets a first and goal.

Jemere Jackson plowed in for a touchdown on the next play, giving the Hornets a 15-0 lead, after the extra point.

Montevallo put points on the board with less than a minute remaining in the ball game. Bulldog running back Undreaz Lilly bounced to the outside and raced down the sideline for a 26-yard touchdown.  The extra point was good making the final score 15-7.

Montevallo head coach said he felt his team had room for improvement, but was better than last season at this point.

“As you can see we’ve got a lot to work on, but I believe we’ve taken a step forward from where we were last year, and all I want our guys to do is compete and get better every day,” he said. “We’re going to continue to fight and focus on changing the mentality of this football team.”

Dallas County will kick off the regular season Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m., when they play host to Calhoun.
