Oak Mountain drops opener to Shades Valley

Oak Mountain took a loss in its first game of the 2013 season, losing on the road to Shades Valley, 38-15.

The Mounties opened up the scoring on a 28-yard pass that put them up 7-0 following an extra point at the 6:26 mark in the first quarter. A 71-yard touchdown run stretched the lead to 14 following the point after came with 3:52 left in the first quarter.

Shades scored once more, on a field goal to end the quarter with a 17-0 lead. Oak Mountain missed a 46-yard field goal at the end of the first.

Oak Mountain came back in the second quarter as Josh Gaines took a 6-yard run in for a touchdown. A two-point conversion was successful, and the Eagles trailed 17-8 headed into the half.

Shades Valley picked the scoring back up in the third, as the Mounties scored 21 unanswered to jump out to a 38-8 lead with 3:28 left in the third.

Oak Mountain opened up the third by scoring, as Warren Shader hit Harold Shader for a 22-yard touchdown pass. D.J. Garver nailed the extra point to make the score 38-15.

That would be the final score as neither team crossed the goal line again. Warren Shader finished with 55 yards passing and a touchdown. Galen Lloyd led all Oak Mountain rushers with 66 yards on the ground. Avery Nguyen led the Eagles with 29 yards receiving.

Oak Mountain will return home for a matchup with Wetumpka Sept. 6.
