FROM STAFF REPORTS

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team started their season off in an exciting manner on Sept. 5, as they needed overtime to defeat Talladega College 2-1. Montevallo relied on two senior stalwarts in the victory, as Ricky Davey and Gary O’Neill were responsible for the two Falcon goals.

The Falcons had the majority of opportunities in this contest, outshooting the Tornadoes from Talladega 23-8 throughout the course of the night. Despite being in control and getting three shots on goal in the first half, while the Tornadoes failed to register a shot on goal, the Falcons were unable to put any points on the board in the first forty five minutes of the contest.

Montevallo broke the scoreless tie early in the second half, as Ricky Davey was able to score on a penalty kick and give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The lead seemed insurmountable with the solid defense and spectacular goaltending that the Falcons feature. Midway through the second half, Brendan Ledgeway stopped the Tornadoes first real scoring attempt in spectacular fashion. However, the Tornadoes would eventually break through at 80:50 as Alonso Castro was able to get one in the back of the net.

To decide a winner, the two teams would need overtime. Montevallo was relentless in the extra frame and scored the game-winning goal less than six minutes into the period. Gary O’Neill, the captain of this squad, was able to take a Remy Moulard pass and convert it into an overtime winner.

Montevallo will take the pitch again this Saturday against also undefeated Eckerd College. This will be another home contest for the Falcons. The two teams will play at Varsity Field 1 p.m.
