FROM STAFF REPORTS

MONTEVALLO – The Sept. 27 women’s soccer game between the Armstrong Pirates and the Montevallo Falcons was an even contest with few shots and even fewer goals. Unfortunately for the Falcons, their run of bad luck continued, as the lone goal of the game went to Armstrong and the Pirates prevailed over the Falcons by the final of 1-0.

The game’s only goal came early, just 5:37 into the contest. Brianne Matarazzo got the ball from Mary Margaret Davis and was able to sneak it past Taylor Kerr to put the Pirates on the board.

Montevallo fought hard all game, but would come up short. With 11:30 remaining in the second half, desperate to send the game to overtime, Montevallo got their best scoring opportunity of the contest. Montevallo moved the ball downfield with perfect execution, eventually finding Julie Heltne in the box for a golden opportunity, but Maggie Carson was able to stop the ball before it reached the back of the net to preserve the Armstrong lead.

In total, each team recorded 10 shots. Montevallo had six corner kicks to Armstrong’s five and 10 fouls to their five. Carson recorded six saves, while Kerr recorded four.

The Falcons will take the field again on Wednesday, Oct. 2when the Falcons will take on Clayton State. They will also honor select members of the Montevallo faculty and staff who have helped their collegiate careers both on and off the field during Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
