Local motorcycle riders and thrill seekers will be able to get their fill of adrenaline on Oct. 12 while also raising money to combat a rare disease.

The Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson dealership in Pelham will kick off the fundraiser at 8:30 a.m. by holding a motorcycle ride from the dealership to the Cullman Regional Airport.

Cost for the motorcycle ride will be $35 per rider or $40 for a tandem bike.

Once arriving at the Cullman Regional Airport, those interested in skydiving will be able to strap on a parachute and take to the skies. Pelham Mayor Gary Waters has already agreed to make the jump.

All money raised during the motorcycle ride and skydive will benefit the International Foundation for CDKL5 Research.

The skydiving fundraiser was organized by Pelham police officer Dustin Chandler, whose 2-year-old daughter, Carly, is one of only about 600 people worldwide diagnosed with CDKL5, a rare neurological disorder which brings symptoms such as frequent seizures, severe gastrointestinal disorders and visual impairments.

The cost of the jump is $189 per person, and those interested in skydiving during the event can register online at Skydivealabama.com by using the group number 1829 and selecting the 8 a.m. or 4 p.m. time slot.

“This does not mean you will jump at that exact time, it just means you will be in the system,” Chandler wrote in an email, noting skydivers can also register the day of the event.
