The Alabaster Fire Department has added a new color to its stations for October, and is using the change to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer.

Throughout the month, the department is taking part in the Pink Ribbon Project, which is helping to raise money to combat breast cancer.

All month, the city’s firefighters are wearing T-shirts displaying pink Alabaster Fire logos and the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon.

The department also is selling the shirts at Fire Station No. 3 at 910 First St. S. at a price of $15 for short sleeves and $20 for long sleeves. All proceeds from the shirt sales will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.

“Like so many others, members of our family have been affected by breast cancer,” Alabaster Fire Chief Jim Golden wrote in a release. “We are proud to help bring awareness and raise funds for much needed research.”

Also through the project, the department has painted fire hydrants pink at all city fire stations and at the new Alabaster City Hall. The department is encouraging Alabaster residents to sign the pink hydrants as a display of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
