The Thompson Warriors volleyball squad took on the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs Oct. 9 in an area matchup and absolutely dominated the Mustangs, 3-0.

The Warriors dubbed the match a “Pink Out,” and encouraged fans to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Warriors also made Andrea Thames, a local volleyball coach who has breast cancer and is the mother of team member Madison Thames, an honorary coach for the game.

In the first set, the Warriors and Mustangs played close, with Thompson holding a 13-10 lead midway. THS broke the set wide open when it went on a 12-2 run to close out the set, 25-12.

The momentum carried into the following set, as the Warriors opened up on a 17-4 run. Thompson never trailed in the set, taking it by a score of 25-7.

The Warriors appeared to hit their stride in the third set, racing out to a 13-3 lead. Stanhope could only muster two more points to Thompson’s 12, as the Warriors finished off the set, 25-5.

Thompson head coach Kellyanne Gandy said she was pleased with the effort.

“I thought the girls did a great job of running the offense,” she said. “Some sub players came in and for good reps.”

Kelsey Bivins finished with 13 kills, Tara Miller had 35 assists and seven aces, Taylin McCarver had nine kills, Milea Ray had five kills and five digs and Sierra Glover had right aces for Thompson, who will face Tuscaloosa County for senior night on Oct. 17.
