UM volleyball falls to No. 19 West Florida

The University of Montevallo volleyball team fell to nationally-ranked University of West Florida 3-0 in non-conference action Oct. 8.

The Falcons fell to the Argonauts, 25-19, 25-10, 25-22. West Florida entered the match ranked No. 19 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll.

Senior Michelle Carle led Montevallo (11-5) with six kills in the match. Fellow senior Manyi Ati and sophomore Rebekah Phelps added five kills each.

Senior Kaleigh Harvey led the Falcons with 14 digs, while sophomore Anna Quinn added 11 digs in the match.

Freshman Hannah Christie registered a team-high 11 assists.

Montevallo kept the margin within four points through the first half of the opening set, with a kill by Ati trimming the deficit to 16-13. However, West Florida closed the set with a 9-6 run to clinch the opening frame, 25-19.

The Falcons kept the margin close early in the second set, with Christie recording a kill to cut the Argonauts’ lead in the set to 13-9 midway through the frame. West Florida responded with a 12-1 run to close out the 25-10 win in the set.

Montevallo trimmed a six-point deficit midway through the third set to two points, with Phelps recording a kill to cut the Argonauts’ lead to 20-18 late in the set. However, West Florida held off the Falcons down the stretch in a 25-22 win in the set to clinch a sweep in the match.

The Falcons return to action Friday, Oct. 11 with a home match against UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt Conference play.
