HOOVER – Students packed the Greystone Library for the school’s bi-annual book fair during the first week of October.

Students browsed through shelves of books, including new releases, reference, science, activity and humor books. Posters and toys were also for sale. The book fair was open throughout the day, but each class also had a scheduled time to visit.

Talan Smith and Weston Brock, both in the first grade, talked animatedly while comparing books on Oct. 3.

“(The book fair) has a lot of books and we get to get fun books and stuff like posters and cool stuff,” said Smith, who was planning to buy a “Fly Guy” book.

First grader Katie Laney said she was planning to buy a “magic fairy book.” She said she had been very excited about the book fair.

“I really like it because I really enjoy books,” she said. “It’s just fun to read.”

Library Julie Richey said the most popular books were the “Pete the Cat” series for the younger series and the “I Funny” books for the older students. She said students look forward to the book fair, which is held in the fall and spring.

“They’re all excited. This is always the highlight of the fall,” she said. “It helps the kids build their own little collection for the summer.”

In addition to encouraging students to read, the book fair serves as a fundraiser for the schools library. Richey said the library hasn’t received money from the state in about six years.

“They is pretty much our only source of income right now,” she said.

Richey and volunteers set up the book fair and help students decide which books and posters to buy.

“We have lots of volunteers. They’re a big, big help,” Richey said. “I couldn’t do it without them.”
