ALABASTER — The streak of perfection is complete.

The Kingwood Christian JV volleyball squad captured the AISA JV State Championship Oct. 12, at home, remaining undefeated through the entire season and the four matches played in the tournament.

After compiling a perfect 20-0 record through the regular season, the Lions — made up of seven players on the entire roster — took down Autauga Academy, Eastwood and Lee-Scott Academy before a rematch with Lee-Scott in the finals.

In the first set of the finals, Kingwood opened up with a 3-0 lead, but Lee-Scott then went on a 10-2 run to hold a 10-5 lead.

Following a timeout by head coach Tony Boyd, the Lions inched back into the set, but were unable to close the gap completely. Down 21-15, Kingwood then took control of the match with a 7-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. The squad never trailed again, and the Lions took a 25-23 first set victory.

The second set saw the Lions get down early again, this time 8-2. Kingwood had trouble closing the the gap, with the score at 10-4 before a 9-3 run tied the set at 13-13. The Warriors then got away again, but Kingwood tied the game at 17-17. With the momentum in had, the Lions pulled away on a 7-3 run, capturing the match and the title.

“The were dedicated,” said an emotional Boyd after the win. “They expected to win. They put a lot of time in, a lot of sacrifice. In the summer, when no one was in the gym, they were in the gym.”

In tournament play, Kathryn Boyd led the team with 30 kills, 18 aces, two blocks and five kills, while Kirsten Boyd had 45 assists, two blocks, 10 aces, three kills and three digs and Natalie Watts had 23 kills, three blocks and five aces.
