HARPERSVILLE – Despite opening just two months ago, the Harpersville-based indoor batting facility Swing Away is already looking to expand by sponsoring travel ball teams and adding an infield practice facility nearby.

Since the facility opened in August, Harpersville mayor Theoangelo Perkins said it has been a “great draw to the town,” bringing in out-of-towners from Childersburg, Chelsea, Calera and other places.

“I’ve been several times,” Perkins said. “I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old, and they love it.”

Currently, Swing Away is a place where individuals and teams of all ages can practice batting. The facility offers four batting cages, seven pitching machines, two training tunnels and training aids for players at the Wiffle Ball, Little League and competitive baseball and softball levels.

Owner Dickson Kidd said he’s been eying a field across the street and would love to provide teams with a place to practice in-fielding, too.

“I think Swing Away is going to be a tremendous asset to Harpersville if we can get the field across the street,” said Kidd, who has already met with Perkins about the field. “Other teams from all over the South will come here to practice before they go to tournaments. Really, it’s a win-win for both the students and the city.”

Swing Away is also interested in sponsoring travel ball teams, Kidd said. The facility has already met with a Columbiana-based girls’ softball team, and Kidd said he hopes to continue to bring teams to the facility.

Teams interested in using the facility are encouraged to reserve space in advance, though Kidd said individuals are welcome to “come and enjoy the facility at any time.” The facility provides about 30 quality bats, several batting helmets and balls that patrons can use when renting cages.

Swing Away is located at 39321 Alabama 25, Harpersville. Hours are Monday through Friday 2-8 p.m., Saturday noon-8 p.m. and Sunday 1-6 p.m.
