CECIL — The Kingwood Lions defeated the Macon-East Knights 39-10 Friday night in Cecil.

The Lions got the scoring going with 9:32 to go in the first quarter when Montez Haynes returned a Macon-East punt 52 yards for a touchdown.  Austin Dowdy added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The Knights answered the score on their next drive covering 65 yards before settling for a 34-yard field goal with 3:49 to go in the 1st. On the ensuing drive the Lions drove 80 yards in Six plays with most of that coming on Gage Sumrall’s 67-yard pass to Montez Haynes on third and 15 with less than a minute to go in the quarter giving the Lions a 14-3 lead.

In the second quarter Kingwood continued the scoring as Sumrall hit C’Yontai Lewis on a 52-yard strike with 9:10 left in the quarter. The extra point was blocked and Kingwood led 20-3. With 6:57 to go in the half Charles White recovered a Knight fumble at the Macon-East 49. With 4:39 to go in the half Sumrall connected with Lewis again for 38 yards for the score. Dowdy’s kick was good and The Lions led 27-3.

Kingwood closed out the half with a Sumrall 12-yard pass to Haynes with 25 seconds to go. The PAT was no good, giving the Lions a 33-3 lead.

Macon-East scored at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter making the score 33-10. The Lions closed out the third quarter with a 23-yard run by Charles White. The PAT was no good, giving Kingwood a 39-10 lead.  The fourth quarter saw both teams exchange punts and the Lions get some reserves in the game.

Sumrall finished the night 5-of-8 passing for 170 yards and four touchdowns. Charles White led the Lions rushing attack with seven carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Tyler Byrd was the leading tackler for Kingwood with four tackles and 11 assists.

KCS head coach Steve Birmingham said he was happy with his team’s effort.

“(I’m) very, very proud of the boys,” he said. “We will continue to go to work and see how far we can take this.”
